ABOUT THE LUCELEC TRUST
LUCELEC sees its success as inextricably linked to the success of customers, communities and the country. In short, LUCELEC cares. As part of LUCELEC's policy to facilitate social and economic sustainability in the Saint Lucian community,” the LUCELEC Trust Company Inc. was formally established on October 14, 2005 as a non-profit company, funded through a Deed of Covenant between the St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) as the Donor and the Trust.
The Trust was set up expressly for the purpose of providing financial assistance or purchasing items and/or property to aid any legitimate non-political entity falling within the following categories: religious, charitable, medical, educational institution, sporting body, fund of a public character approved by Cabinet, and the Loan Fund established under the Further Education (Loan Fund) Act.
Under the Deed of Covenant, the Trust is also mandated to provide assistance to the following specific organisations: Centre for Adolescent Renewal and Education (CARE), Youth Training Centre, Cornerstone Humanitarian Society, National Community Foundation, St. Lucy's Home, Adelaide and Frances Memorial Home, Marian Home, Malgretoute Home, Holy Family Children’s Home, New National Hospital Project, the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College Division of Technical Education and Management Studies (DTEMS), the St. Lucia National Trust, and the Cul de Sac Day Care Centre.
LUCELEC provided initial funding of two million dollars to the Trust and under the Deed of Covenant is committed to provide additional sums to the Trust annually.
The Trust comprises three Directors who are the Trustees and its day to day affairs are managed by an Executive Officer and Secretary. All of the Directors and officers of the Trust are employees of LUCELEC.
“The Trust responds to requests for assistance or donations. Such requests are received by the Executive Officer who evaluates them against the criteria as established by the Deed Covenant of the Trust and makes recommendations to the Directors (Trustees) of the Trust. Once the Directors approve a donation, cheques are disbursed or the items requested are paid for.
The Trust is mandated to assist organisations or institutions, NOT individuals.
An effective donation request letter or proposal should include the following components:
-
Which organisation is asking for the donation, and what is the legal status of the organisation (club, charity, school, sporting association etc.).
-
A clear statement of the mandate and objectives of the organisation. If possible, and where applicable, a copy of the registration certificate for the organisation.
-
Why is this donation required? (An explanation of the need for the project, event or activity and what are its key objectives.)
-
Who will the donation benefit, and how? (For example, 300 students of the Ave Maria Infant School will be able to use the library. This will help to improve their reading skills, broaden their areas of interests, lead to improvements in other subject areas and contribute to the holistic development of the students.)
-
How is the organization qualified to execute the project, event or activity for which the donation is being requested? (Has the organisation undertaken such initiatives before? What has been the outcome? Include testimonials, if available.)
-
What are you asking for? (Be specific- not just uniforms, but uniforms (shirts, shorts, socks, etc.) for 12 team members).
-
If you are seeking support for an event or activity, provide a budget for the activity, indicate how much of the cost of the project, event, or activity that you are seeking to be met by the Trust, and indicate whether there are any other donors or sponsors that have confirmed their support.
-
Is the project, event, activity sustainable? How will it be sustained?
-
The name and phone number of at least one contact person (from the group or organisation).
-
Signatures – All requests or proposals should be on letter-headed stationery and signed by a duly authorised officer ("major" group members i.e.: President, Vice President, Chairman, Board Members, CEO, etc.) or the contact person.
Donations should be requested well in advance of the date needed. This is essential if your organisation, group, club, or project is following a strict timeline. Your group or club maybe required to complete a donation request form supplied by the Company if your request letter or proposal is inadequate.
Donation requests are handled on a first come first served basis.
The Trust may require 3 to 4 weeks or more to process a donation request, especially if additional background checks are to be made or project details are needed.
The Trust would not normally provide funding for monetary prizes for events or for meeting day to day operating costs for organisations.
Since its inception the Trust has approved more than two million dollars in donations.”
