The Environment

We use energy in everything that we do, in our homes, in our schools and to travel. Using too much energy from non-renewable sources can harm environment. Each energy source has impacts on the environment. Energy sources have different impacts or effects on the environment. Some of these effects may include emissions, waste, and land or water use impacts, among others. With your help we can protect the world around us. You can help protect the earth by using energy the right way.

How You Can Save Energy
It's easy to forget where electricity comes from, how much it costs or the impact of its production. Reducing your electricity consumption benefits you, your family and everyone else. Using less electricity saves money, conserves energy resources and preserves a cleaner environment.

We all use energy every day, for transportation, cooking, heating and cooling rooms, manufacturing, lighting, and entertainment. The choices we make about how we use energy, turning machines off when we’re not using them or choosing to buy energy efficient appliances, impact our environment and our lives.

There are many ways you can use less electricity right now!

What you can do?
It might seem like kids can’t do much to help. But every time you turn off a light bulb or close the refrigerator door, you’re saving energy. You can also help by reminding adults to buy energy saving light bulbs and appliances and to use appliances efficiently.

Turn off lights and all electronics (like computers, televisions, and video games) when you leave a room.
Use rechargeable batteries instead of non-rechargeable batteries.
Open your blinds or curtains during the day to let the sunlight into your home instead of switching on a light bulb.
Close your blinds or curtains when operating your air conditioning unit.
Let your clothes dry on a clothesline or a drying rack instead of using dryer.

Energy and Recycling
Recycling means to use something again. The products we recycle, like pop cans, newspapers, glass and cardboard, are used to make new products. Companies that make new products from recycled material use 30 percent less energy. That's because they don't have to process the raw materials from scratch.

Natural resources are things provided by the earth, these include land, plants, minerals, and water. By using materials more than once, we conserve natural resources.

How can you help?
Everything you recycle at home and school helps save energy and the environment, so keep up the good work!

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is made from resources that Mother Nature will replace, like wind, water and sunshine. Click here to learn more about the different types of renewable energy.
