Consumer Safety

At work and at home electricity is a fact of life. And because it's so much part of everything we do- lighting the workplace and home, cooking, powering equipment etc.; it's easy to start taking it for granted.

Here are a few tips to develop a safe attitude towards electricity:

  • Train children not to put things into electrical outlets. Plastic outlet guards are a good idea.
  • Never insert a metal object into a toaster without disconnecting
  • Extension cords are for temporary use
  • Never climb power poles or transmission towers
  • Only used tools that are fully insulated and carry the UL label
  • Never break off an earth pin to fit plug into a different type of socket
  • Keep ladders, kites and TV antennas away from power lines
  • If someone gets shocked by a power line don't try to remove the victim or the wire Call 911.
  • Turn off electric irons when leaving the house or when not in use
  • Make sure you know the wattage of your appliance. Too much electrical appliances on the  same circuit can lead to overloading which leads to overheating -leads to an electrical fire.

Customer Tip
"If you must buy 110-volt equipment, make sure it is supplied with a three-pin plug for use on earthed systems, and use the correct transformer. Never cut off the earth terminal."
