Environmental Safety
Increased environmental legislation and a need for utilities to be more environmentally responsible, means that environmental management is as a big an issue as tackling risks to people's health and safety.
Successful environmental management involves taking a systematic approach to identifying and reducing the risks that a utility poses to the environment.
A few steps to this systematic approach are:
- Complying with local relevant environmental legislation
- Minimizing the risk to the public from it's operation
- Protecting the natural environment (environmental impact studies)
- Requiring contractors to meet the utility's standards as well as the local environmental legislation
- Minimizing emissions and wastes
- Regularly assessing the environmental impact of the utility's operation
- Periodically review utility's standards viz. environmental changes and reports on environmental accidents locally as well as internationally.
