Preparing for Hurricane Season
Don't bother putting masking tape on glass windows and doors before a hurricane. It's a waste of time and will not stop glass getting shattered and fragments flying all over the place. But you'll have great trouble trying to remove the tape afterwards.
It's silly to think that closing windows on the wind side, and opening them on the lee side will help. No house is air tight enough for this to work. Close everything up tight.
If you don't have house insurance, you deserve everything you get. You may think it's expensive, but it cannot compare with losing your home. Have a talk with an agent.
- Buy a full-replacement or replacement cost insurance policy. The policy should cover windstorm damage.
- Purchase a policy that covers the cost of replacing your possessions, rather than the original cost.
- Because the after effects of hurricanes are unpredictable, consider purchasing property insurance for fire, lighting damage, explosions, smoke damage, vandalism, thefts, and other unexpected events.
Water probably causes more damage during a hurricane than the wind. See to your drains. Next most important thing? Clear immediate trees from your property.
Make sure your important documents are in a safe place.
Prepare for you and your family to survive for 24 - 48 hours without outside help if necessary.
If evacuation is necessary, have a place for you and your family to go. People who live in high-risk areas should arrange to stay with relatives, friends or in shelters (most Schools and Churches)
Minimise the risk of fire.
Think about the type of construction which is most likely to withstand a disaster whether hurricane, flood or earthquake.
Do not be surprised if you should lose power during a hurricane, it may be necessary to switch off the power to protect life and property.
