The Power Company announced on Thursday (March 29, 2012) that it was committing forty-five thousand dollars (EC$45,000) to sponsoring the National Schools Science and Technology Fair for the next three years.

LUCELEC has been one of the consistent sponsors since the Science Fair was re-introduced a few years ago.  In making the renewed commitment to the Ministry of Education, LUCELEC Corporate Communications Manager, Roger Joseph, noted that the Company is satisfied that the fair is achieving its objective of propagating interest in Science & Technology among students.

“The National Schools Science and Technology Fair remains an important element in the drive to develop critical thinking, problem solving and knowledge application skills among students, as well as encouraging innovation in Science & Technology for St. Lucia,” Joseph said.

Joseph commended the Ministry of Education on the growth of the fair over the years noting that the programme has expanded to include Science Fairs at the District level from which entries for the National Science Fair are selected. He also observed that the national winners of the Science Fair have gone on to do really well at Science Fairs at the regional level.

Acting Deputy Chief Education Officer responsible for Planning Natalie Elliot, received the cheque on behalf of the Ministry of Education.  She applauded LUCELEC for continuing its support as the premiere sponsor of the Science & Technology Fair, and for the increased contribution.

She noted that the Company was helping to develop the innovators of the future.

This year’s National Schools Science and Technology Fair is being held from April 2 – 4, at the Marigot Secondary School under the theme “Science & Technology Advancement; Changing Our Lives Through Scientific Competition”.

The funds to support the National Schools Science and Technology Fair are being provided through the LUCELEC Trust, which was set up several years ago to provide assistance for non-profit educational, sporting, and charitable entities.

LUCELEC was recently presented with the Award for Corporate Social Responsibility at the St. Lucia Business Awards hosted by the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture.
