Statement on Second Island Outage - Friday, September 10, 2021

Castries, September 10, 2021Saint Lucia experienced a second island wide power outage in the space of a few hours.  The second outage occurred at 9:06 p.m. shortly after power had been restored across the island at 8:02 p.m.

The second outage was caused by a recurrence of an earlier protection system fault at St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited’s (LUCELEC’s) generating plant at Cul De Sac that tripped all the generators, resulting in a total shutdown of the electricity system.

Power restoration following the second outage began at 9:30 p.m. and was completed at 10:45 p.m.

Chief Engineer Gilroy Pultie says, in the interim the backup protection system is being employed, while the team seeks to resolve the issue with the primary protection system.

LUCELEC apologises to its customers for the unplanned outages and for the inconvenience caused.
