LUCELEC Opens Health And Safety Month With Recognition
Castries, March 20, 2024 – An excerpt from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, “Though she be but little, she is fierce” – fittingly describes the St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) Health, Safety, Environment and Security Officer (HSESO), Priscilia Stanislas.
At the launch of the Company’s 28th annual Health and Safety Month observance on March 1 – it recognized Ms Stanislas for her efforts in putting occupational health and safety at the forefront of LUCELEC’s operations. Working with her Health & Safety Committee, the HSESO has headed the company’s annual month’s observance for the past 17 years. And, this being her final one, LUCELEC Generation Engineer Jevon Nathaniel used the opportunity to express thanks and say job well done.
“Her unwavering commitment to Health and Safety at LUCELEC has benefitted the company over the years. Despite her petite stature, she can be firm. Her passion and dedication have transformed the company into a beacon for Health and Safety, guiding us towards a path of admirable success. Her leadership has been the driving force behind our achievements with regards to our health and safety performance. We salute Ms Stanislas for her dedicated long service to LUCELEC as a catalyst for progress,” he said.
For her part, Ms Stanislas spoke of the importance of health and safety in the context of the month’s theme.
“Our theme ‘For everyone’s safety, work safely: Get involved’ captures the very essence of our collective endeavor. It underscores our commitment to fostering a culture where each member of our workforce is empowered to contribute their best, knowing that their safety is our utmost concern.”
LUCELEC observes Health and Safety Month for equal parts reinforcement and new training. Managing Director Gilroy Pultie says working safely is always the only option.
“Safety knows no boundaries,” he says. “It transcends job titles, departments and levels in the organization. It’s about looking out for one another, recognizing that our actions ripple through the lives of those around us. When we work safely, we create a shield of protection that envelopes our entire company and the wider public. The smallest of infractions sometimes can have major consequences, not only for the worker but for others and we must always be mindful of this. Simply do everything as it should be done and to the set standard. We must also pay attention to the impact of what we do on the environment as this to can have major consequences for our health and safety and sustainability.”
The launch had as its Featured Speaker – the lightning rod Parish Priest of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Babonneau, Fr Albert Smith. He professed his message around 1 Corinthians 12: 24-27 and called on all LUCELEC team members to obey the “Golden Rule” to ensure theirs and the safety of all.
“We have a responsibility for the other person. The Golden Rule is “do unto others as you would like others to do unto you”. You want somebody to check for you, check for other people. Bottom line. If we take that as part of our everyday living, LUCELEC would be a better place because there’s always room for improvement at any institution, at any establishment, anywhere you have human beings – there’s always room for improvement.”
One of the highly anticipated features of the annual launch is the presentation of the Health and Safety Award. LUCELEC Contractor Firm Islandwide Electricals, was so awarded, recognized for being “well trained, consistently wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and responding with the right tools to do the job safely without sacrificing efficiency.”
LUCELEC Health & Safety Month is observed every March. The opening ceremony was held virtually and in-person at the company’s Cul-de-Sac Power Station.
