LUCELEC Introduces Electric Car Charging Station

Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) has established an electric car charging station at the JQ Mall in Rodney Bay. It is a test point for a corporate diversification project that will eventually be managed by a subsidiary company LUCELEC is in the process of setting up.

The project is currently being managed by a Corporate Diversification Team headed by LUCELEC Financial Controller Jonothan Edwards. Mr Edwards says the electric charging station would allow owners of electric vehicles to charge their vehicles through purchase of a card similar to a credit card.

 “People with an electric car will need to register with the subsidiary company for a card that when inserted into the station will allow them to charge their cars. These cards have to be pre-paid and charges will be provided based on their value. And while owners will also be able to plug their cars into outlets at home, the charging station would be faster and more convenient,” says Mr Edwards.

Saint Lucia is currently home to two electric cars. However, following meetings with car dealers and with an eye on the future, Mr Edwards says LUCELEC is satisfied the introduction of electric car charging stations will encourage growth in the electric car population.

“The vision is to roll out some of these charging stations across the island in addition to the current test point in the north. We will follow that one with charging stations in strategic locations – north, south, mid-island so people will conveniently be able to charge and as the number of vehicles grow, so too will these stations,” he says.

The electric charging station is not yet up and running but is expected to be soon.

Corporate diversification is a strategic priority for LUCELEC as the company looks to the future that will see changes to its core business and the operating environment. New initiatives like the electric car charging stations are designed to ensure LUCELEC diversifies into other areas that could very well sustain its core business.
