LUCELEC Embraces Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl

Castries, October 26, 2023 – The challenge from the Monsignor Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre (FRC) was to support Fèsten Jwé – a gathering of youth, families and communities that fosters recreation and joy as part of observances for Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl (Creole Heritage Month). The St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) accepted and agreed to team up with the FRC as its presenting sponsor. 

 

Fèsten Jwé is a signature event on the of Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl calendar. It seeks to promote good cultural health through the teaching and playing of traditional games.  Held in Aux Lyons, Dennery and the Church Yard of the Babonneau Good Shepherd Catholic Church on October 15 and 22 respectively, it was an invitation for all to play the games of old. 

 

This year too, LUCELEC was a sponsor of the return of Heineken Saint Lucia’s signature event Oktoberfest En Kwéyòl on October 22.  And, on October 14, LUCELEC team members attended the annual Dwivé Kwéyòl at Chassin in Babonneau, where they were immersed in kwéyòl festivities including traditional games, storytelling and masquerade. 

 

LUCELEC customers will be included in the company’s Kwéyòl celebration on October 27 when they will be treated to traditional eats and drinks at both of its Customer Service offices in Rodney Bay and Vieux-Fort. 

 

Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl is one of the major national cultural festivals created by the FRC to celebrate Saint Lucian tradition, Kwéyòl culture and language. This year was a significant milestone for the organization which celebrates 50 years as a movement and 40 years since its first celebration of Jounén Kwéyòl in 1983. LUCELEC has been a longstanding supporter of creole heritage month activities, recognizing the integral role of culture in our national identity.
