LUCELEC Sets New Record In Environmental Volunteerism

Castries, February 27, 2026 – St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) has set a new internal benchmark for environmental volunteerism, with close to one hundred of the Company’s more than 280 employees contributing to a record 374 volunteer hours over the past year in support of environmental sustainability initiatives across the island.

The milestone effort formed part of LUCLEC’s Volunteer Programme and was delivered in collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture. The most recent activity took place on a bright Saturday morning at the Clendon Mason Memorial Secondary School in Dennery and was the Company’s second planting exercise in support of the Ministry’s Sustainable Snack Initiative.

The initiative focuses on cultivating local fruit trees to promote healthy eating among students while enhancing green spaces on school campuses. During the activity, volunteers and students planted lime, lemon and soursop trees, along with fat poke plants to create a natural hedge around the school’s perimeter.

Among those taking part were 5-year-old Shai Eleuthere and student Angella Joseph who both played an active role in beautifying the school grounds.

“I planted seven trees today. I enjoy and I like planting. The fun thing I did today was planting helping the plants grow,” said Shai, alongside Angella who planted “to help the school, to make the background and everywhere around the school look pretty, to help the students learn new things.”

Forest Officer attached to the Dennery Range; Marthas Peter underscored the importance of partnerships in advancing national sustainability goals.

“It is our mandate to create better environmental spaces, to create more opportunities for people as well through our work. We have been trying to assist and partner with many other corporate and private entities to help create more environmental awareness and we are more than pleased and privileged that LUCELEC has taken the mantle and have been integrally involved in not just this planting exercise but many an exercise and we are looking forward to more collaboration with LUCELEC in that regard.”

LUCELEC’s Corporate Communications Officer, Richmond Felix, noted that employee response to the initiative was overwhelming and was a physical manifestation of the Company’s commitment to a greener future.

“This initiative and the reason we are doing and driving with our volunteers is to ensure sustainable living with the environment, healthy eating especially for future generations. On this occasion we were oversubscribed by our volunteers asking to be involved in this initiative and the school itself also did a push that went very far that so many of the students and teachers wanted to be involved today.”

Principal of the Clendon Mason Memorial School, Alpheus Ignace, highlighted the educational and community benefits of the initiative.

“Students were given the opportunity during that exercise to get hands on experience of what it is like to plant trees and transfer this to their science classes. It also created more community engagement because there were not just a few officers, quite a few persons from LUCELEC, from the school community as well as the team from the agriculture department,” he says.

In 2025, 94 LUCELEC employees participated in volunteer activities under the Company’s Volunteer Programme, reflecting a growing culture of service and environmental responsibility within the organisation.
